How does in-person / face-to-face tutoring work?

Written by Daphne Lim - Updated

Post-COVID, a lot of customers want in-person tutoring. In some cases and for some students, it can be the best option for them!

How can I change my profile to tutor in-person?

Start by navigating to the KIS App to edit your profile normally. You can then edit your available in-person postcodes based on where you want to tutor.

Note that tutoring in-person does not mean at-home tutoring! You are also able to find a public place (like a library) somewhere in between your location and where your student stays. It's safer, and more convenient for you too!

How does the study skills consultation work?

When you call the customer to discuss tutoring, you should organise the study skills consultation to be done online. This will ensure that you can do the 30 minute session and build some rapport before your first in-person lesson with the customer.

Where should I tutor the student?

You should conduct all future lessons at the location agreed to by you and the customer. This may be a library, a customer's home etc. If agreed to between both you and the customer, you can always switch to online lessons, or conduct a few lessons online if required (ie. due to travel issues, sickness, etc.)

If the student lives far away, you can follow these steps to organise something that is convenient for both of you. If you are uncomfortable tutoring at a student's home but that is their preference, you should discuss an alternative location with them

Can I charge a travel fee?

In short, yes! The maximum rate is $1/km travelled. This means if you have to travel 5km from your place to wherever the in-person location is, you can discuss a $5 travel fee with the student.

Please read here to find out how to organise a travel fee and make sure to discuss it during your first call with them

What are the expectations with home tutoring?

If you're tutoring in-person, you must make sure to strictly adhere to the Child Protection Policy, KIS Academics Code of Ethics and our Expectations for tutors. This is especially important if you're tutoring in someone else's home!

Most importantly, tutors should apply the following standards:

  • Tutoring should be conducted in rooms where there are windows, so that a person outside the room can see into the room, or the door should be open so that the tutoring can be viewed and heard. Furthermore, no child should be disciplined by a tutor in a room with a closed door.
  • Tutoring should only take place in a public part of the home with a parent or responsible adult present. Tutoring should never take place in a child’s bedroom. At the end of each session that takes place within a child’s home a responsible adult, who was present in the home throughout the duration of the tutoring, should sign off the session as having been conducted appropriately and in a public space.

You can see more info here on child protection policies on the ATA site: https://ata.edu.au/resources/child-protection/

What if I only tutor online but I've still received a request for in-person lessons?

You should ALWAYS contact the customer to have a chat, regardless of the content of their request and their message. Refer to this article: What to do if you get a request from someone very far away
