What to do if you get a request from someone very far away

Written by Daphne Lim - Updated

If someone who lives quite far requests you, your FIRST point of business should be to try to continue with the student!

Things to do:

  1. Mention that you are happy and available to take them on.
  2. Reiterate why you think you’d really be able to help them and are a great fit.
  3. Let them know how far away from you they are and that it’s not where you’d usually be tutoring.
  4. Adding a travel fee to the hourly fee to compensate you for your time (maximum rate is $1/km away from you!)
  5. If they’re after in-home tutoring, suggest meeting at a local library halfway between you to minimise driving time.
  6. Having a go at online tutoring. Do take note of time differences if there are any!
If the Student is NOT in Australia

KIS Academics is now known beyond Australia, as some of you may have noticed. If you get a request from a student with a number that is NOT an Australian number, here is what you can do:

  • Email them and let them know where you are based, and what time zone you're in.
  • Send them a message on free platforms: iMessage (if available), Whatsapp, Telegram etc. If the student is unavailable on those platforms, email and ask them to get one of those messaging apps so that you can communicate a little quicker.

Sometimes, students are really just too far away from you, and it's fine if that does not work out. Please follow the steps in this article: What if I can't take on a New Student Request? Message #help on Slack or email contact@kisacademics.com if you have any other questions.
