Receiving your first tutoring request! Understanding The KIS Student Journey

Written by Daphne Lim - Updated

To understand how to be a good tutor, you need to understand the "Student Journey" or "Lifecycle" at KIS Academics. This refers to the very first moment the student comes into contact with our company, all the way to the very last minute of their last lesson with KIS.

Our role as a company is to make this entire experience delightful from start to finish, and you play a crucial part in this lifecycle as well.

The Student Journey

Tutoring Request 🔔

Parents or students usually begin by making a request for a tutor on the KIS Academics website here. They'll fill in their details and submit a form. We usually pair them up with a tutor within 10 minutes

We'll then call them within the next hour, ask any relevant follow up questions, and tell them a bit about the tutor we've paired them with (you!)

(I bolded those two phrases above^ to show you the lengths we go to to delight our customers. You might think this stuff doesn't matter - but think of the last time you tried contacting CentreLink for example. Obviously a very different situation, being kept on hold for hours and waiting weeks to get a response to a query or application, but  the point is customer experience matters. Students and Parents will remember and notice how quickly we reach out to them.)

Then, we'll send the parent/student an email with a link to your KIS Academics profile. Via this link, they can read your profile, see your subjects and profile photo, then send you a message.

First Contact 💬

You'll get an email when a customer requests you as a tutor.

This is your first contact with the tutor, and your goal is to find a time to organise a Free Study Skills Consultation with them. Learn more here.

You should contact all new requests, no matter whether or not you can take them on or the content of their message to you. If you can't take a student on, you should organise a tutor swap.

Free Study Skills Consultation ✅

This is your first formal meeting with the student. This is your opportunity to blow them away with how smart, thoughtful and friendly you are. This is the make or break, but we have a pretty good track record: Over 90% of our trial sessions progress to paid lessons. Learn more here.

Actual Lessons 🧑‍🎓

Your first lesson is important - at this point parents and students are happy with you as a tutor. Now you've just got to prove to them that you're always as smart, thoughtful and friendly as you were during the trial sessions.

After a few lessons, things get much easier. You've built a strong relationship with the student and things are going smoothly. But it's important to always keep in mind the student's goals and KIS Academics' focus on providing an amazing educational experience.
