Am I a KIS Academics employee, contractor or customer?
Written by Daphne Lim - Updated
KIS Academics tutors are legally classified as a class of customers - you share the same contract in our Terms of Service as students and parents approaching KIS Academics for help. This is why you are required to hold an ABN - you are technically a sole-trader business using the KIS Academics Platform as a user/customer.
Can I ask KIS for a Reference then?
If you're just a tutor with us, we cannot provide you with a reference because you're a class of customer.
However, KIS Academics often contracts tutors for small tasks and extra work through avenues such as our Job Board. These tasks may be blog posts, social media posts, and short term, one-off projects. In other cases, it may be longer term contracts that engage you for a long time doing an internal role. In these cases, we can help you write a reference.

What do I do for my Taxes then?
Please note that these are NOT TAX ADVICE, just some guidance:
- The tutor shall be responsible for managing and filing all necessary taxes and paperwork. As such, KIS Academics will not withhold any taxes from the tutor’s pay. The tutor is personally liable for appropriate withholding and payment of all federal, state, and local taxes, unemployment compensation, disability payments and any other amounts due or assessed on the basis of tutor‘s tutoring income.
- As a sole trader, your tax is normal income tax, and you submit it like a normal person and not a business. So there is no need to submit quarterly reports.
